Short answer
About a third of Witney homes were built in 2000 or later, so many handyman jobs here are on modern houses. The older centre is in the Witney and Cogges conservation area. Near the River Windrush, clear gutters and drains matter. Oxfordshire Trading Standards asks residents to get three written quotes.

How new are Witney homes?
Newer than in most Cotswold towns. In the three Witney areas, 33.7 per cent of homes on the Council Tax list date from 2000 or later. In Witney West, almost half were built between 1973 and 1999.
HSE says buildings from after 2000 are unlikely to contain asbestos. So drilling, shelving and flat-pack jobs in a newer house carry less of that risk.
Some estates have planning conditions that remove permitted development rights. Check your planning history before you put up a tall fence or a shed.
Who lives in Witney homes?
Witney is close to the England average for age. In the 2021 Census, 19.6 per cent of residents in the 5 town wards were 65 or over. The England figure was 18.4 per cent.
Of the 12,802 households, 33.4 per cent owned their home outright. Another 14.0 per cent lived in a purpose-built flat.
Witney Central ward had the most flats, with 536 households in purpose-built blocks.
Why do gutters and drains matter near the Windrush?
Parts of Witney flood. In July 2007, about 240 properties in the town flooded, the Environment Agency found.
Blocked gutters, downpipes and gullies send rain against walls and into low rooms. A handyman can clear them each autumn and check that each downpipe runs into a clear drain.
Check your address on the GOV.UK long term flood risk service before you plan work on a ground floor.
What should I do if a trader calls at my door?
Do not agree to work on the doorstep. Oxfordshire Trading Standards says to get at least three written quotes and a written contract.
It says doorstep crime often starts with a cheap, quick job that grows into more work and higher costs. You can display a No cold calling sign.
For most jobs you agree at home, the law gives you 14 days to cancel.
Questions
Do I need permission for a satellite dish in Witney?
In the Witney and Cogges conservation area, a dish must not face and be visible from a road. West Oxfordshire District Council designated the area in 1968.
Can a handyman replace my windows?
GOV.UK says replacing windows and doors falls under Building Regulations. Use a firm on a competent person scheme, or get building control approval.
Do villages near Witney have conservation areas?
Yes. Ducklington became one in 1988, Minster Lovell in 1990 and Hailey in 1992, the council list says.
