Fence and gate repairs in the Cotswolds

Short answer

A handyman can replace a broken fence panel, reset a post or rehang a gate. In England, a fence usually needs no planning permission up to 1 metre high next to a road, or 2 metres elsewhere. A listed building or an Article 4 direction changes this. This page lists local firms.

Common fence and gate jobs

Most fence jobs follow a storm or rot at the foot of a post. A handyman can usually do these jobs.

  • Replace a broken or blown-down fence panel.
  • Reset or replace a leaning or rotten post.
  • Fit a gravel board to keep a panel off the soil.
  • Rehang a dropped gate, or fit new hinges and a latch.
  • Treat or paint timber fences and gates.

Height limits without planning permission

You can usually put up, change or replace a fence, wall or gate without planning permission within these limits. The rules are in the General Permitted Development Order 2015, Schedule 2, Part 2, Class A.

  • Up to 1 metre high next to a road used by vehicles, or its footpath.
  • Up to 2 metres high anywhere else.
  • You cannot make an existing fence higher than these limits, or higher than it was, whichever is more.
  • The right does not apply to a listed building, or within its curtilage.
  • A council can remove the right with an Article 4 direction or a planning condition.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

In a conservation area, you might need permission to take down a fence, wall or gate. The Planning Portal says so, so check with the council first.

Many Cotswold boundaries are dry stone walls, not fences. A wall in the curtilage of a listed building is often part of the listing. Do not take down or rebuild it without advice from the council.

Before work starts

Check who owns the fence. The deeds or the seller’s property information form may show it. If it is a shared boundary, talk to your neighbour first.

Ask the handyman whether the price covers the panel, posts, concrete and taking the old fence away. Our fence panel cost guide shows published prices.

Questions

How high can my garden fence be without planning permission?

In England, usually up to 2 metres, or up to 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles or its footpath. A listed building or an Article 4 direction can change this.

Do I need permission to replace a fence like for like?

Usually not, if the new fence is no higher than the old one and within the height limits. A listed building, or a planning condition, can change this. Ask the council if unsure.

Can a handyman repair a dry stone wall?

Some can do small repairs. A long or tall wall needs a skilled waller. If the wall is near a listed building, ask the council before work starts.
