Flat-pack assembly, shelves and wall fixings
Short answer
A handyman can build flat-pack furniture and fix it safely to the wall. Tall units, such as wardrobes and bookcases, should be fixed to the wall to stop them tipping. Old stone and lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings. Firms charge by the hour or by the item. This page lists Cotswold firms that do this work.

What the job involves
The handyman unpacks the parts, builds the item and checks that doors and drawers run true. Most will take the packaging away, but ask first.
A big job, such as a fitted wardrobe, takes longer. The handyman may need to fix it to the wall and cut it to fit an uneven floor.
Fix tall furniture to the wall
Fix tall furniture to the wall to stop it tipping over. Many makers supply a wall strap or bracket with the unit. The strap holds the unit only if the fixing into the wall is sound.
Ask the handyman to fix chests of drawers, wardrobes and bookcases in rooms where children play.
Fixings in old Cotswold walls
Old Cotswold houses often have thick stone walls with soft lime mortar, or lath-and-plaster walls and ceilings. A plug that holds in brick may not hold in these walls.
A good handyman checks the wall first. Then he or she picks a fixing that suits it, and finds pipes and cables before drilling.
In a listed building, a new fixing in historic plaster or panelling can affect its character. Ask the council if you are not sure.
How firms price flat-pack work
Firms charge by the hour, by the item, or with a minimum charge. One Carterton firm publishes flat-pack assembly from £60, and a bed or wardrobe from £100 to £180. Our flat-pack cost guide shows more published prices.
Tell the firm the make and the product code. Many makers publish the number of steps, which helps the firm to price the job.
Questions
Will a handyman take the packaging away?
Many do, but some charge for it. Ask before the visit, and say how much packaging there will be.
Can a handyman fix a TV to a stone wall?
Usually, yes. Ask the handyman to check the wall and to use fixings rated for the weight of the TV and bracket. Ask where the cable will run.
Is it cheaper to pay by the item or by the hour?
It depends on the job. For one simple item, a fixed price can be cheaper. For many items, an hourly or day rate can be cheaper. Ask for both.
