Odd jobs and small repairs in the Cotswolds

Short answer

A handyman does the small jobs that a bigger trade will not take on. Examples are a sticking door, a loose handle or a dripping tap. Most charge by the hour, often with a minimum charge. Gas work and some electrical work need a registered trade. This page lists Cotswold firms that do odd jobs.

What counts as an odd job

An odd job is a small task that takes from a few minutes to a few hours. Many people save up several jobs for one visit.

A list for one visit makes better use of a minimum charge. Write the list down and send photos before the visit. Then the handyman can bring the right parts.

  • Doors that stick, drop or do not latch.
  • Loose handles, hinges, locks and catches.
  • Curtain poles, blinds, pictures, mirrors and TV brackets.
  • Draught strips, letter-box brushes and door stops.
  • Small plumbing jobs, such as a new tap washer or a toilet seat.
  • Sealant round a bath, a basin or a shower tray.

What a handyman must not do

A handyman must not do gas work unless he or she is on the Gas Safe Register. HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be Gas Safe registered.

Some electrical work is notifiable under the Building Regulations, for example a new circuit or a new fuse board. Small changes to an existing circuit away from a bath or shower are not. Ask who will certify notifiable work before it starts.

Our guide on what a handyman can and cannot do explains these limits.

Small repairs in old Cotswold houses

Old stone houses move with the seasons. Doors and windows often stick in wet weather and free up in dry weather. A small adjustment is often better than planing a lot of wood away.

Cotswold District Council says traditional buildings need materials that let moisture out, such as lime. Cement and synthetic paints can trap damp in old walls. Tell the handyman the age of the house before work starts.

If the house is listed, even a small change to a historic door or window can need listed building consent. Ask the council first.

How handymen charge

Most handymen charge by the hour, often with a minimum charge or a first-hour rate. Some give a fixed price for a common job.

Ask what the minimum charge covers, and whether parts and travel are extra. Ask if the price includes VAT. Our hourly rates guide shows prices that local firms publish.

Questions

Can a handyman change a light fitting?

Often, yes. A like-for-like change on an existing circuit, away from a bath or shower, is not notifiable. The work must still be safe. A new circuit or work near a bath or shower is notifiable.

Can a handyman fix my boiler?

No, unless the handyman is on the Gas Safe Register. By law, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on gas appliances in a home.

How do I get the most from a minimum charge?

Put several small jobs on one list. Send the list and photos before the visit, so the handyman brings the right parts and tools.
