Price guide
How much does it cost to replace a fence panel?
Short answer
One Carterton handyman publishes fence repairs at £80 to £180. A national installer charges £96 in labour to fit one panel, falling to £45 each for 7 or more. A Cheltenham supplier sells lap panels from £25.76. Posts, concrete and taking the old fence away add to the cost. Get at least two written quotes.
What local firms charge
Local published prices for a fence repair run from £80 to £180. Few local firms publish fitted prices. Most quote after they see the fence.

Labour prices from a national installer
One national installer publishes its labour price per panel. The price per panel falls as the number of panels goes up. This is a national firm, not a Cotswold quote.
From the price page of Fence Installers, based in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, checked on 15 October 2026. Panels, posts, gravel boards and concrete are extra. The firm says poor access, steep slopes or poor ground can change the price. It is not a local price. Sources: Fence Installers (Biggleswade, national installer): fence installation prices.
What adds to the cost
A storm often breaks a post as well as a panel. A rotten or broken post costs more to replace than a panel, because the old concrete must come out.
- New posts and concrete.
- Gravel boards to keep the panel off the soil.
- Taking the old panel and post away.
- Poor access, such as no side gate.
- Close-board or other heavier fence types.
Rules for fences
A like-for-like fence panel does not usually need planning permission. In England, a fence can usually be up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles. A listed building or an Article 4 direction can change this.
How to compare fence quotes
Ask each firm what the price includes. Then compare like with like.
- The type and height of the panel.
- Whether posts, concrete and gravel boards are included.
- Whether the old fence is taken away.
- Whether the price includes VAT.
Questions
Can I replace just one fence panel?
Yes. If the posts are sound, a new panel slots between them. Labour for one panel costs more per panel than for several. One national installer charges £96 for one panel.
Do I need planning permission to replace a fence?
Not usually, if it is no higher than 2 metres, or 1 metre next to a road. A listed building or an Article 4 direction can change this.
Who pays for a shared fence?
The owner of the fence pays. Your deeds may show who owns it. If it is not clear, talk to your neighbour before work starts.
